This is maybe the least offensive thing the man has ever done. As Keith Olbermann pointed out, it's an apt image of the entire Bush presidency: from his perspective, everything looked just fine. To us, it was backwards.

isn't that that Kissinger in front of Laura? being reminded that that fucking war criminal is not behind bars where he belongs, is one of the things that is more offensive than what the president is doing with the flag.

Did you see him almost every time the cameras cut to him during the opening ceremonies? He was obviously bored out of his mind and drumming his tiny American flag on his knee. This man is so deeply embarrassing. I have no idea what to say.

As long as the flag is not upside down, its fine... Because both sides can be viewed, the blue union is supposed to face the North or the East towards Washington, D.C. And if it is on something that moves, like a uniform, the blue union is supposed to face forward. That's why you sometimes see the flag backwards looking, like on the Army uniform. You walk forward, so the blue union is in the front.

i disagree, Paul. in this case both sides cannot be viewed; the side facing the president is visible only to him.
i have reviewed the Flag Code with care and, because essentially only the outward-facing side can be viewed, I believe that the provision for displaying the flag against a wall applies here.
"When displaying the flag against a wall, vertically or horizontally, the flag's union (stars) should be at the top, to the flag's own right, and to the observer's left."
The only reason the union faces forward on uniforms and vehicles is to convey the appearance of the flag streaming backward with the movement of the person or vehicle. This does not apply here.
