I cheered along with the rest of the world in 1986 when Corazon Aquino became the President of the Philippines and kicked those Marcos chumps out, shoes and sunglasses and all, partially because she was so cute and partially because my friend Max did a mean Corazon impersonation.
But I do find this profile of Imelda fascinating and bizarre and incredibly compelling, and it kind of makes me want to be her friend.
I mean, come on, a Power Point presentation?
Okay, her friend from far, far away, but still.
Aiee. It reminds me of Cyndi Lauper asking Helen Hunt, “You wanna wear my tiYARah? It’s BeJEWUHld,”* on Mad About You.
*The moment has since become a signature line between my mother and me – something that is probably all too telling about both our relationship and ourselves.
I think the life and times of Imelda Marcos would make a fabulous musical!
Think about it, a strong powerful women, played by an asian drag queen! It would be the Evita of our time. “It’s bejeweled” could be a great aria number, and catch-phrase!
Think about it!
I totally am Imelda Marcos’ evil twin. Just like her I have heaps of junk jewels and 2000 pairs of shoes.
And I crave for servants and slaves too…of course I have a PA which is just about the same except you don’t have to feed them.
I once tried to update the lyrics to Madamina by making them about Imelda. Tragically, my efforts foundered upon the rocks of my ignorance of ladies’ footwear.
Bejewelled with garbage.
God, I love that line!

According to my sources, David Byrne just made a musical based on the life of Imelda. It’s showing in Australia now, but I am crossing my fingers that it comes to NYC.
Does this have something to do with that Empress of China thing?
