Let me get this straight: the government has been illegally spying on us for years, and our president, after promising to do whatever it takes to rebuild Louisiana, opposes the only adequate Katrina relief plan anybody has come up with–a plan that enjoys wide bipartisan support–because it might cost as much as three months of the war in Iraq and is therefore too expensive, and the company formerly run by our vice president has been awarded a $400 million contract to build concentration camps even though they send rotten meat to our troops overseas, and all we can talk about is how the vice president shot somebody?
Though I guess even the greatest of tragedies need comic relief every few quires or so.
I think that the issue is not so much his having shot someone, it’s that he shot the WRONG someone.
It’s impossible to even think about it. It’s unthinkaboutable.

Yeah, if you watch the Daily Show, they did a segment of which the basic point was, “the journalists are spending more time talking about and investigating a hunting accident than they ever spent seriously investigating oh, say, WMD, Valerie Plame, Abramoff, etc.” Oh well, it would be so depressing if the American newsmedia focused on things like Darfur and Iraq…I mean, when an attractive young white woman goes missing, that’s newsworthy.
Sin, you might well have a point there. However I think the issue is not so much his having shot someone but that the WRONG someone was shot.If Dick Cheney had been -quite understandably- mistaken for a goose, now that would have been news worth mentionning…

yeah, the least offensive action the guy’s ever taken as vice president (in terms of the sheer number affected, anyway–hell, only one person’s life was fucked up as the result of his efforts in this particular instance), yet this is the one that gets all the press. this happens in the same week, btw, that his former chief of staff tells us that he committed treason at the behest of his “superiors,” but this goes virtually unnoticed. perhaps america would have paid more attention had britney spears chosen another week in which to drive around with her kid in her lap, but, sadly, i somehow doubt it.
You forgot the part about Michael Crichton advising Bush about global warming.
I think it’s something to do with the fact that if you close your eyes when he’s delivering his first news statement after the shooting you can almost imagine that he’s apologising for something else.
And then you open your eyes and realise that hell had not yet frozen over.
