The Search for Love in Manhattan

February 25, 2005

It's time here at the Search for Love in Manhattan for another installment of Words I've Had Trouble Remembering This Week. (Go here for the most recent installment.)

1. apotheosis
2. compatible
3. bacchanalian

Luckily, "algorithm," a popular entry in previous installments, has come to me quite easily. So perhaps not all hope is lost.

Just most of it.

Well, look at it this way: most people don't even KNOW those words.

I reckon I was about your age when my vocabulary started to become, well, intermittently reliable. And it's all downhill from here. Still, how often do you need to use "apotheosis" anyway? (Though I daresay you can work "apotheostically" into a double dactyl before sundown.) There's no real upside to diminished vocabulary recall, but you can borrow my excuse, if you like. I invariably explain it by saying, "Hey, the processor still works at full speed, but the hard drive's been full for years."

How did those words surface anyway?

Lyrics for another orgy tune?

4) Convivia said (on 02/25/05 at 06:43 PM):

I spent some time today wondering if the opposite of paranoia should be "eunoia" or "pronoia". I'm still not sure.

Also, I suspect even the glancing contact you had with The Da Vinci Code the other day may have damaged precious brain cells.

6) ruggerjohnnyd said (on 02/28/05 at 08:16 PM):

You had trouble remembering them? I would have trouble even using two of them.

7) James said (on 03/ 1/05 at 09:44 AM):

Finally! This is the first installment of Words I've Had Trouble Remembering This Week where I know what all three words mean off the top of my head!

Wow... After ages and ages of reading your blog, I'm departing with a boost in my confidence. Thank you, sir.

I've just realized I'm too stupid to read your blog. Best to leave now before you make fun of me.
