Okay, so I have a new book coming out and I’ve already gotten my first negative review from somebody who hasn’t read it! (Everything between the first sentence and the last paragraph is quoted from a review on Lambda Literary’s website.)

The book is called Lawfully Wedded Husband: How My Gay Marriage Will Save the American Family, and it looks like this:

I’ll post about the book itself later on, but I’m too excited by the review not to post it immediately:

“As American leadership declines, these messages in a bottle from that quaint and flatulent Victorian empire seem more and more irrelevant every day. Marriage, the refugee camp of the intellectually exhausted conformist, must be dolled up to look like the Academy Awards ceremony. Can these people really think of themselves as superheroes for joining the status quo? Yes they can!”

They are painful and alter the quality of life of the patient, making it difficult to talk, eat, drink. Read it twice and still can’t figure out how the final paragraph follows from those preceding. It’s less a negative review than a conversation between the voices in some guy’s head.

Oh, sorry not to make it clear: everything between the first sentence and the last paragraph is quoting a review from http://lambdaliterary.org.

It would be the author’s fault for not making that clear, not yours, but it’s barely more coherent with that in mind.

I went and read the entire review. I’m not quite sure how the body of the review justified the reviewer’s conclusion. It occupied my morning, however, to critique his collection of photographs. At any rate, you’re still my hero, a brilliant go-go boy with a heart and conscience (and a literary stylist, to boot).

    From the site’s MANifesto:

“On a deeper and more perennial level, we claim a lineage from Whitman, Gide, Auden, Genet, Pasolini, Ginsberg, Warhol, Fassbinder, Gunn, Mapplethorpe, Waters, White, Wojnarowicz, and Cooper.”

So they were all plagiarists? Sheesh.

I just finished all 3 excerpts posted at “The New Civil Rights Movement” and I want your book. I can relate to the split celebrations of commitment and marriage. I wear 2 rings on one finger because of it. When we lump our kids and grandkids together like other families, we get questioning looks. I hope our family makes a difference.
We are also a family of 2 faiths. I am Pagan and she is Christian ( with Pagan leanings). Lots of holidays!
