By now you’ve almost certainly heard the news about Jerry Sanders, the Republican mayor of San Diego who reversed his position against same-sex marriage.
What you probably haven’t heard the news about is the fact that the press conference at which he made the announcement is deeply, deeply moving.
This probably won’t affect Arnold Schwarzenegger’s probable veto of the gay-marriage bill the California Assembly just passed, but when a politician actually wrestles with his conscience to figure out the right thing to do I figure we should let him know we appreciate it. Write him a letter of support at jerrysanders@sandiego.gov.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
It will be a disappointment if the Gov vetoes the bill, but as this enlightened mayor finds he can change his mind, so others will in an ever-enlarging group that will eventually transform this country. This is something in which I believe deeply.
I dropped the good mayor an email. Got back a “thanks for your message, but due to high volume, the mayor cannot respond to everyone individually” for letter in response. No matter; the fact that people like him are out there makes me happy enough.
That should be *form* letter. I’d have corrected sooner, but I saw something shiny… oh, and your blog thought I was a viscious spam-monger, and wouldn’t let me post twice in succession.
