Last night my friend N.E. and I had the following conversation:

N.E.: I got yelled at by a stage manager once in college for laughing during a student production of a play. She actually cornered me in the lobby during intermission and yelled at me. I was like, I’m sorry I thought your show was funny.
FAUSTUS: Oh, my God. I can’t believe how awful people are. What play was it?
N.E.: Electra.

You mean it isn’t? Good Lord! Next thing you’ll be telling me that Medea really kills her children and isn’t just pretending.

I’ve always enjoyed the light, domestic comedies of Eugene O’Neill myself.

    Electra? Not so funny.

Electra Woman and Dyna Girl? Way funny.

    Maybe N.E. was just confused.

I once sang in a production of Die Fledermaus where the conductor was a raging drunk. At the dress rehearsal he could barely stand up, and toward the end of the first act he ordered the rest of the rehearsal “closed” and made the audience (mostly friends, well wishers, and house staff) leave because their laughter was “distracting the performers.”

The Trojan Women made a lot of folks laugh when we did it in college. The set had more levels than the acting. Tee hee.

As someone who’s done a lot of bad theater, I don’t feel bad at all saying that people who do bad theater need to stop blaming the audience!
