Warning: This may be the most unamusing post I’ve ever written.

So does anybody have any experience with WeRecoverData.com? After examining my hard drive, they have just quoted me a price only slightly less astronomical than the other company I spoke with. (Apparently I suffered a level 4 crash. I don’t know what this means but evidently it’s very bad.) For the sake of convenience I’d just as soon stay in Manhattan–the home of WeRecoverData.com–but if anybody has had a bad experience with them then I’d rather send the thing to the place on the west coast I mentioned a few days ago. It’ll take roughly the same amount of time in either case.

So if anybody knows anything about WeRecoverData.com, or, you know, just wants to comfort me, feel free to comment.

I would send you some chocolate, but my lawyer tells me it would violate the terms of the restraining order.

Oh, Faustus, my heart is breaking at the thought that any of your writing might be lost.

If you had a Mac this program would fix you right up: http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
There may be a similar product for PC’s – if there is get it and try it.

He DOES have a Mac. DiskWarrier is a good but, I’ve heard, low-level solution. If his crash is as bad as it seems, DiskWarrier may not work. However, it has just occurred to me that there is a Mac software solution I’ve seen at the Apple Store (not DiskWarrior) that is also specifically supposed to recover lost data. My guess is that his drive is simply not functioning enough to employ a software solution.

I would take no chances with something as important as your writing. Let a professional sort it out and be scrupulous about backing up hereafter.

DriveSavers has always seemed to be very pro-Mac … only company I think of when it comes to data recovery.

Faustus, go with whomever Tekserve suggests. Everyone who has had this happen seems to send their computer off to Florida or California and it usually costs $1000-$2000.

I hope that your hard drive gets fixed really soon ( I don’t know anything about computers either) so I guess what you just said does sound bad.

As an internet addict, I would commit suicide if I didn’t go online everyday.
    *sigh*
I know what you’re going through.

Ruby said it much more eloquently than I ever will…Discovering your blog was one of the best things that has happened in my life recently. I don’t want to make it sound like I’m desperate or something!:) I’m creating a ‘fan base’ for you here in Greece and will possibly manage to increase your book sales a little bit. I hope that’s a tiny bit comforting. You are much loved, you should know that. Based on your popularity, perhaps you should let werecoverdata.com know how discredited they will be if they don’t deliver as promised…

  13. I’m not going to say anything about running regular backups. Nothing at all.

i red a review about werecoverdata once. never used them but apparently most recovery companies send their harddrives to them to have it fixed since they are the only recovery firm with a clean room in the east coast. It seems even Google uses their service! Unicef, NY Post and BET Channel.. i think you are in good hands with those guys.
