This year I was unable to come up with a good New Year’s resolution in time. Theoretically I made some pitiful claim that I would keep better track of my finances, but that attempt has already fallen by the wayside, as would be evidenced by even a cursory examination of my bank account if I were brave enough to make one, and, besides, it seems underwhelming as a guiding principle for the year.

However, yesterday, in a flash of inspiration, I finally came up with a decent resolution, and since the lunar new year (used in both the Chinese and the Jewish calendars) isn’t until Thursday, I figure I can start then.

The resolution is:

Careless.

It’s hard for one to be both neurotic and careless; will “a gay odyssey of neurosis” become something more blithe? Something like “gallavanting gaily — gay-ly!” And being the carefree person you’ll become, it won’t concern you that gay-ly probably won’t be found in OED.

  2. Towards the end of the year and over the holidays it feels like someone tossed my personal and work lives like a salad. It has left me so confused that I have no idea where to even start with resolutions. I guess a good first one would be to restore some sens of order in my life.

Is it Careless or Care Less? By the way, Indian Calendars are lunar as well. Lunar is the way to go.

  5. I am voting for care less. It is easier on the old heart.

Here’s some simple ones I made:

    1. Tit-for-tat. (Applies to friends, girlfriends, co-workers, all except family. Don’t expect something from me that you have not proven you are willing to do for me).
    2. The shrink is out. (Need advice? Drink more, think less).

These should save me a lot of time and anguish.

The Jewish calendar is lunar, but the New Year doesn’t start until Tishri, if I recall correctly.
